Shawarma in Dubai: Where Locals Actually Eat It
A guide to Dubai's favorite fast food — chicken vs. beef, what makes a good wrap, and where to find it away from the tourist markup.
Shawarma: Dubai's Everyday Fast Food
Shawarma — meat (usually chicken or beef/lamb) slow-roasted on a vertical spit, shaved off, and wrapped in flatbread with garlic sauce, pickles, and vegetables — is the closest thing Dubai has to a universal fast food. It's sold on nearly every commercial street, from tiny hole-in-the-wall counters to chains, and it's consistently one of the cheapest filling meals available in a city that can otherwise be expensive to eat in.
Chicken vs. Beef/Lamb
| Type | Typical Sauce | Flavor Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken (farrouj) | Garlic sauce (toum) | Milder, juicier, the most common default order |
| Beef/Lamb (lahm) | Tahini or amba (pickled mango) sauce | Richer, slightly gamey, often preferred by locals |

Where to Find Good Shawarma
Small independent shawarma counters, particularly in older neighborhoods like Al Karama, Deira, and Satwa, tend to have the most character and the sharpest prices — often AED 8–15 for a wrap. Newer chains in malls and along Sheikh Zayed Road are reliable but slightly pricier and less distinctive.
If a counter has both a rotating spit and a visible line of regulars, that's usually a good sign — high turnover keeps the meat fresh rather than sitting under a heat lamp.
