Shibati: Chongqing's Historic Stone Steps
Shibati (literally "Eighteen Steps") is one of the oldest residential districts in central Chongqing, a steep network of stone stairways that historically connected the upper city, built on higher ground, with the lower riverside settlements near the Yangtze. For most of the 20th century it remained a genuinely old, largely unmodernized working-class neighborhood of hanging wooden houses stacked along the slope — one of the last such areas left standing in the rapidly redeveloped city center.
After years of debate over whether to preserve or redevelop it, Shibati underwent a major renovation completed in the early 2020s, rebuilding much of the district as a heritage-style commercial and residential complex while keeping its distinctive stepped street layout and hillside character intact. The result sits somewhere between old Chongqing and Xintiandi-style redevelopment: polished enough for cafes and boutiques, but still genuinely defined by the terraced stone stairways that gave the district its name.
Walking Shibati means walking up and down, by design — the district's entire identity is built around its terraced, stair-stepped layout climbing the hillside, a very literal expression of Chongqing's famously vertical urban geography. Along the way, small shops, teahouses and restaurants occupy buildings that echo the district's older wooden-house architecture, even where the structures themselves are newer reconstructions.

Shibati sees noticeably fewer visitors than Hongyadong or Ciqikou despite being centrally located and similarly photogenic — a good option if you want comparable atmosphere with smaller crowds.
Shibati sits close to central Jiefangbei and Jiaochangkou metro station, making it easy to fold into the same day as Hongyadong or downtown sightseeing. Because the district is built on genuine slope rather than flat ground, budget more time than the area's small footprint on a map might suggest — the stairs slow everyone down, which is very much part of the point.
