The Yangtze River Cableway: An Aerial Icon
Opened in 1987 as one of China's first river-crossing cable cars, the Yangtze River Cableway spans 1,166 meters over the Yangtze, connecting central Yuzhong District to Nan'an District on the opposite bank. It was built as genuine public transport at a time when bridges across the Yangtze were scarce, and while modern bridges and metro lines have long since taken over that role, the cableway survives as both a working transit link and, more than anything now, a tourist ride prized for its views.
The four-minute crossing gives you a sweeping look at Chongqing's uniquely vertical skyline — a city built on hills and cliffs, with towers seemingly stacked on top of each other along the riverbanks — from an angle no bridge or observation deck quite replicates.

The Yuzhong-side station sits close to central Chongqing's downtown core, making it easy to combine with Jiefangbei or Hongyadong in the same day. On the Nan'an side, Nanbin Road's riverside promenade offers one of the city's best spots to look back across the water at the skyline you just crossed, especially once the lights come on after dark.
Ride it as a round trip rather than a one-way crossing if you don't have anywhere specific to be on the Nan'an side — the return journey gives you the same view from the opposite direction as the light changes.
