Best Budget Hotels in Macau
Six of the best-reviewed budget hotels in Macau, from the Portuguese old town to Taipa, with real booking links and honest notes on rooms, breakfast and noise.
Macau has a reputation for expensive casino resorts, but the old peninsula has a quieter budget scene built around small two- and three-star hotels, a few boutique conversions and some long-running Portuguese-era properties. They will not have waterparks or spas, but they put you within walking distance of Senado Square, St. Paul's and the best Macanese food, at a price that can be a third of a Cotai resort's weekend rate.
The six hotels below combine strong guest scores with honest value, and each links straight to its listing on the booking platforms where we could verify it. We have been candid about the downsides, which at this price are usually small rooms, limited breakfast and the occasional noisy street.
How Much Do Budget Hotels Cost in Macau?
A clean private room in a two- or three-star hotel on the Macau Peninsula typically runs roughly $50 to $120 a night midweek, and more on weekends, during Golden Week and around Chinese New Year, when even small hotels can double their rate. Rooms are compact and many of these properties do not serve breakfast, so the real cost of a stay often includes a morning coffee and egg tart at a nearby cafe. Booking a weekday night where you can is the single biggest saving in Macau.
| Hotel | Area | Stars | Guest Score | Price Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Macau Hotel S | Senado Square | 3 | 9.0 | $$ |
| Caravel Hotel | Old Town | 2 | 8.8 | $ |
| Belive&More | Barra | 2 | 8.7 | $ |
| Hotel Sintra | Northern Peninsula | 3 | 8.4 | $ |
| Hotel Guia | Guia Hill | 3 | 8.1 | $ |
| Macau Masters Hotel | Inner Harbour | 3 | 8.1 | $ |
We filtered Macau's hotel inventory down to two- and three-star properties with strong guest scores across a real volume of reviews, then focused on the walkable old-town area around Senado Square, the Inner Harbour and the Guia hill, where a small hotel actually puts you in the middle of what you came to see. Price level is shown as $ (cheapest) to $$ and is relative to other Macau hotels, not an exact rate.
Best Areas to Find Budget Hotels in Macau
The old town around Senado Square and the Inner Harbour is the best area for a budget stay: the historic centre is on foot, bus stops are close and the Portuguese and Macanese restaurants are at your door. Guia and the northern peninsula are quieter and a little cheaper, with a good local bus network. Taipa village is a charming alternative with its own food street, but hotels there are less likely to be truly cheap. For beach quiet, Coloane is lovely but not a budget area.
1. Macau Hotel S

Formerly the Macau Hotel Sun Sun, Macau Hotel S has 178 rooms on Praca Ponte e Horta, close to Senado Square and the Historic Centre. Opened in 1994 and renovated in 2022, it leans into the neighbourhood with an art-inspired theme and colourful graffiti facades by local artists. There is a gym and a bar, but no pool and, according to several sources, no breakfast. At 9.0 the guest score is excellent, and the location is the best in the old town for the price. Rooms are air-conditioned with private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi, and there are family rooms. Hotel Sintra has been a Macau fixture since 1975, with 240 rooms on the corner of Avenida de Dom Joao IV and Avenida Doutor Mario Soares, renovated in 2014. It is about ten minutes on foot from Senado Square, with bus stops 100 to 200 meters away, and reviewers mention a free shuttle that runs from the front of the hotel to City of Dreams. It has a restaurant serving breakfast. It is not stylish, but it is one of the cheaper options with a three-star standard. Check current rates on Booking.com.
5. Hotel Guia

Hotel Guia sits at the foot of Guia Lighthouse on Estrada do Engenheiro Trigo, a short drive from the centre and the casino district, with a Cantonese restaurant, free in-room Wi-Fi and a bar. Rooms have a minibar and a flat-screen TV, and guests describe it as good value for the area. The guest score is a more modest 8.1 and the hotel is further out than the others here, so it suits travelers who prefer a quiet hill setting and are happy to take a taxi or bus. Macau Masters Hotel is a simple two-star on Rua das Lorchas with 75 rooms, opened in 1991 and renovated in 2023, with a 24-hour front desk, a restaurant and free Wi-Fi. Cleanliness and staff earn good scores at 8.1 overall, but the rooms are small, there is no breakfast and some guests mention thin walls and noise from the nearby port. It is the choice for travelers who want the lowest price on the peninsula and can live with the basics. Check current rates on Booking.com.
A note on prices: the Price Level column is a relative guide, not a quote. Budget hotel rates in Macau double on weekends and during peak holidays, and the same room is often cheaper on one platform than another on the same night, so compare at least two of the links above. Always check what is included, since breakfast, a window and even a lift are not guaranteed at this price level.
